The cost of living describes the amount of money needed to cover basic living expenses such as housing, groceries, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services.

How to Use the Cost of Living Calculator

  • Enter a Salary Amount.
  • In the 鈥淢oving From鈥 section, select your current city or another city you are interested in.
  • In the 鈥淢oving To鈥 section, select 鈥淢I Detroit.鈥
  • Click 鈥淐alculate鈥 and scroll to view cost comparisons.

How to Read Results

Data is available at the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and county levels. The Index uses 100 as the national average and can indicate if a community is above or below the national average. The Index does not measure inflation (or price change over time) because each quarterly report compares prices at a single point in time.聽

2023 Cost of Living

According to the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER), the Detroit Region鈥檚 cost of living is 102.1. Compared with other major metropolitan areas throughout the U.S., the Detroit Region ranks 14th among other peer regions in terms of affordability.

The Detroit Regional Chamber has participated in the National Cost of Living Index (COLI) survey for decades. The survey is published quarterly by The Council for Community and Economic Research, using over 60 goods and services collected at local levels from over 300 communities nationwide. COLI鈥檚 methodology has been recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the President鈥檚 Council of Economic Advisors, Bankrate.com, and the Brookings Institution.
